Elizabeth Colley, possibly from Oddingley



Elizabeth Colley was a spinster when she married the widower Francis Poole on the 18th of September, 1770, in Oddingley, Worcestershire. His first wife, Frances, had died the year before.



Elizabeth’s burial record, dated the second of October 1818, says that she was seventy-one, putting her date of birth at 1747. I have not yet found a record of her baptism, so we don’t know who her parents were or where she was born.


When Francis died in 1802, he left Elizabeth his cottage or tenement, garden and orchard which he had bought from William Brookes of Bridgnorth, as long as she remained his widow. It would then go to their daughter Sarah, who had married a victualler called Thomas Trimnell, who ran the Pheasant Inn in New Street, Worcester. This was a beautiful Tudor timber-framed building dating from 1580.
