Elizabeth Stapleton from Harringworth

Elizabeth Stapleton was Ari’s 3x great-grandmother. She came from Harringworth in Northamptonshire, where she was baptised on 22 January 1843. Her parents were William Stapleton and Ann Harris.

In the 1851 census, Elizabeth is shown as aged nine and at school. When she was seventeen, her father died, and the 1861 census shows her mother, Ann, as head of the household, and a pauper, although this has been crossed out. Elizabeth is nineteen and listed as “agricultural labourer’s daughter”.

In 1869, Elizabeth married James Cobley in Stamford, Lincolnshire, and they then went to live in Tixover, Rutland.

Their first son, William, was born in 1871. The 1881 census gives the family’s address as 4 Empingham Road Cottages in Tinwell, Rutland, which I think is here:

By this time, Elizabeth had given birth to four more children: Fanny, twins Edward and Thomas, and Mary Jane, who was eight months old at the time of the census. One more daughter, Annie Elizabeth, was born in 1885.

By 1891 they were in Glinton, Northamptonshire, living in a cottage on Village Street. They then moved to Town Street. The 1911 and 1921 census records do not give the street address, but they were still in Glinton. In 1921 Elizabeth gave her age as 79 years and one month, which means that she was born in May 1842. She was receiving an old age pension.

Elizabeth died the following year, on the 8th of March in Langtoft, Lincolnshire. The cause of death was morbus cordis (heart disease). There was no post mortem. Her son William was present when she died.

Ari, this is how you are related to Elizabeth:
