John Kent from Kirk Langley, killed in a wagon accident

John Kent was Ari’s 6x great-grandfather, born in Kirk Langley, Derbyshire, in 1781. His parents were James Kent and Elizabeth Blood, and he was baptised on 14 October at St Michael’s in Kirk Langley.



On 3 October 1803, John married Ellen Taylor in Kirk Ireton, about ten miles away.



It looks as though they did not have any children until 1809, when Hannah was born. James was next, named after his grandfather, and then Ari’s ancestor Eliza. The baptism records for Eliza and her sisters Emma and Elizabeth give John’s occupation as labourer. The youngest child, born in 1823 was named John after his father.


Four years later, John was killed in an accident when a wagon ran over him:

His funeral took place at the church on 8 August, and the burial register also includes a note about his death:
