William Stapleton from Stamford

William Stapleton was Ari’s 4x great-grandfather. He was born in Stamford, Lincolnshire, in 1799, the son of David Stapleton (a silk weaver) and Mary Barber.

His baptism took place on 25 August that year at the church of St John the Baptist, alongside his twin brother Joseph.

On 11 November 1837, William married Ann Harris at Harringworth. The marriage certificate shows that he was a labourer, and in the 1841 census he can be seen as an agricultural labourer living in Harringworth, which we visited in May this year:

Their first son, Charles Harris Stapleton, had been born in 1839, and also living with them was Mary Harris, aged eleven.

In 1851, they are still in Harringworth, with three more children: Elizabeth, William and Joseph.

William died on 26 May 1860, with the cause of death given as paralysis and “sloughing of the integuments of the hip”. The informant was a next-door neighbour, Alice Saddington.

William was buried three days later in the churchyard.

Ari, this is how you are related to William:
